VCT Masters Shanghai will star twelve teams, aka the three top teams from each international region's Stage 1 event. The format for this event builds upon the established structure used in Masters Madrid.
Masters Shanghai begins with the Swiss Stage, from May 23 until 27. It has an eight-team Swiss format, with the 2nd and 3rd seeds from each international league. The winning team from each region's Stage 1 received automatic byes into the Playoffs.
All Swiss Stage matches are best-of-three (Bo3). In the first round, each second seed competes against the third seed from a different region. The teams in subsequent rounds are seeded based on their win/loss records. The teams with two wins advance to the Playoffs, while two losses mean they're out!
In the Playoffs, eight teams will compete in a double-elimination bracket: the top four teams from each international league and the four Swiss Stage teams. The top-seeded teams pick their first-round opponents in a randomized order, adding a spicy strategic element to the mix.
All Playoff matches will be best-of-three, except the Lower Final and Grand Finals, which will be played as best-of-five series to maximize tension.
The twelve teams competing were decided through the four Valorant Champions Tour regions' regular seasons, aka Stage 1: Americas, Pacific, EMEA, and China. As such, each region has its top three seeded teams representing it. Interestingly, VCT Masters Madrid winners, Sentinels, missed out on qualifying.
